I don't think it has anything specifically to do with the DR800. It's a problem with eInk in general. Some displays work find in the sun, others do not. I've never seen any official explanation for what happens, or why it happens. Getting the display swapped out (or exchange the device) should work, as long as the new one doesn't have the same fault.
