Grandma's books: paying tribute to a beloved memento

I know we are all ebook fans here, but I wanted to share my pics of my beautiful new kitchen table-slash-computer-area. My grandfather is 85 and recently decided to put his 'affairs' in order, so he instructed us grandkids to come and take whatever mementos we might want before he started getting rid of things. I asked for, and was given, a matching set of 3 A.A. Milne books that Grandma used to read to me when I slept over there as a child.

I had a very special relationship with my grandmother---one of the pivotal relationships of my life---and I did not just want the books mouldering on a shelf somewhere. I wanted to display them and have them as a memento on par with something like what my cousin chose (a vest Grandma had made). I went to a frame store and they did not understand what I wanted; someone suggested I post on the job board for students of a local art college, and I did so and found an art student who did the project for me basically at cost.

She took awhile (she has had the books for going on two months!) and I had some trepidation because it was a little bit expensive. This turned out to be the first 'art' I have really gotten for myself that was all mine, as most of my other home decor is either a cheap IKEA print just to fill a space, or a hand-me-down from my parents. But seeing how they look up there---both as a decor item (at last, I can sit and work and it doesn't feel like I am just sitting in my kitchen!) and as a memento of my special times with Grandma---it was totally worth it. It really is a wonderful memory I have of all the times I spent with her, and I am getting misty-eyed every time I look over and see.

Anyway, here they are I think Grandma would be proud.
