The author has admitted that it's a romance novel in space (though there are some hard bits near the end ... no, not that kind of hard bits! Geez! Some people!). Barrayar is quite different, as are the rest. The "Sharing Knife" books are at least partly romantic, though, which is probably why I didn't like them all that much.
