I've walked some of the places Bryson mentions, and his opinions of them and mine vary quite a bit. He seemed to only see the negative, not the positive, about preservation in the United States and that bothered me.
He also is dismissive of the day hiker, in my opinion, and when he states outright that some people don't belong in the woods, it just really turned me off. Some of us can't just abandon ourselves to the woods in anticipation of a book advance.
Just smacked me of being elitist all around, which was a big turn off.
