In theory (if everything goes as they say it should)...
I'll be reimbursed for return shipping (though I received a surprise email 4 hours after shipping it, at their instruction with a shipping label), was given the RMA etc...
Instead of waiting for it to ship there, be checked, and another one to be sent out (Tiger Direct in Canada ships from the US)...I paid for another up front (they paid shipping again)....
So I should end up with a new one by early next week, and be reimbursed for the one I'm returning (including the return shipping)....so it won't cost me anything but time. Just time.
Apart from the stress I feel about the $ being in limbo until they get the returned device, I'm really only concerned about my ebookwise screen lasting out the week.
Over the past two weeks, the right half of the screen has been flashing black. At first it was only for an instant, but now it flashes and stays black for anywhere from a second to 15 seconds....it seems that changing the angle of the device causes the black rectangle to flow away (like a liquid), most of the time. The longer I use the device, the less pronounced the problem becomes (temperature related?). I did open things up to check connections etc, but everything was plugged in, no glaring craters of subatomic doom, etc. Ah well.
Having played with the defective unit for a bit, I'm feeling confident that (provided the replacement arrives working perfectly) I made the right choice device-wise for what's currently available. I'm excited to start using the various recipes in calibre, and to not have to convert every-single-@#$%@#$-file for my reader (which otherwise I loved!).
