The reason I didn't consider American Gods was that not too long ago, I finished The Graveyard Book and found it to be so-so. Now from what I have been reading about American Gods, maybe it would have been a good choice had it won. But the book we have now is a dull plodding nothing doing book. It's reminding me of A Passage to India in some ways.
