For the sake of clarity, the pipework was in a (nearly) vertical plane. Working from the pump side to the hull side, a pipe ran horizontally to the first (ahem) coupling, after which it descended roughly vertically, until it met the next coupling, whereupon it resumed a horizontal aspect. All this crammed into a corner next the bulkhead, with a minor divergence from the vertical plane en route.
