your #2: I like the idea of getting back the screen space when no device is connected. Might I suggest that a simple text string "Library: 441 books" be added to the Status bar at the bottom when it is hidden.

Make the tool bar appropriate to the current context.
eg,
You don't need a "Add books" (unless it is get from reader) or "Convert" button in Reader view. Reduce the 'unused clutter' when possible.
