Although they use mostly the same characters and some of the same big events, the Sookie Stackhouse books don't correlate with the storyline that True Blood takes. I've read a couple of interviews with Charlaine Harris and she's okay with that, and I think looks forward to seeing in what direction the tv series will go! (I say
mostly the same characters because there are a couple of main characters in the tv version that don't even exist in the books.) Anyway, you can safely read the books without knowing what's going to happen on True Blood. And I think you should -- they are such a fun read!
If you like that genre, try the Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs. I just finished it, and was surprised that I liked it just as well as the Sookie series. Because werewolves are hot.
