Maybe you could try restarting the kindle? Like you have to do with the screensavers when you change them? I remember having this problem; in the end I took every book off the kindle, checked the metadata scrupulously for errors, and then reloaded. Took me a long time....Now, I always load books into calibre before the kindle ever sees them!
