Welcome to MR, Dr. Bob, "ditto" to neilmarr’s advice. Personally, I love my Nook, and highly recommend it. However, it’s not the right choice for everybody. In a city the size of Tucson, you'll b e able to get at least "hands on" Kindle, Kobo, Nook, and some Sony's (alpha order preserved to present the appearance of non-bias.)
Which ever reader you choose, do not leave it in the car, the Arizona heat will cause problems rebooting your reader cannot fix.
