This is symptomatic of a cracked screen substrate. The only fix is to replace the screen.

I still can't authorise (not even in the ways described above) but it looks like Goodreads are on to it.

I'm having the same problem with authorisation. Goodreads does not respond as it should to the oauth request. I've contacted support at Goodreads. I'll let you know what they say.

Dunno. There aren't any raggedy lines on mine. I do have some hacks installed though so it probably isn't a typical example. Anyway - yes, I am quite sensitive to ragged right.

I completely agree with the above. I reluctantly stopped buying Sony devices because of this. And their telephone tech support (the ereader division anyway) is abysmal.
