@vermontcathy, since XP works and W7 doesn't: the Windows 7 firewall is much more robust i.e. less useless than the XP firewall. Your best bet is to make sure the the firewall isn't blocking traffic.

I'd wait until the warranty expired and hack the thing just to get CC, but I bought an extended warranty. Rats!

The only way on a PC to open a book you purchased on Amazon is to install the Kindle for PC reading software. Amazon doesn't allow its books out of the Kindle ecosystem.
