I had used the Kindle as-is since it arrived in May -- no decal/skin/protective case. The included cover was used when I brought it outside, but not when reading at home.

I too had a little trouble with the cover at first. After bending the tab (located on the inside of the cover) up a little more, the Kindle lodges a whole lot better in the cover and doesn't slip out...
