However, that's over a month of usage at 3-4 times per week without any issues. But now the waters are well and truly muddied......

Before launching Calibre (with --ignore-plugins), I was able to browse the Kobo drive happily in Windows Explorer.

If you don't have a USB 2 port (like me), then buy yourself a USB 2.0 hub. Problem solved!

The Kobo will not work with a USB 3.0 port and Calibre.

If your laptop does not have USB 2.0 ports (like mine), simply purchase a USB 2.0 hub and use that.

I had that error until I ran a chkdsk with the Kobo plugged into a USB 2 port.

Nothing I'd do on USB 3 would fix the error. Now all is well.

UPDATE - SOLVED!!

I went into my BIOS and changed the USB ports to be only 2.0. Calibre then functioned perfectly.

This puts the issue most definitely as a USB 3 vs 2.
