I'm in the same boat, after I connected my kobo wifi to my pc, the desktop software doesn't recognize it, and when I look on the drive (from windows), it's empty.

It seems a bit like it was with printed books. First out comes the hardcover for 15 to 30 bucks depending on the book. A year later the mass media (paper back) comes out for 10 to 12 bucks.

On the kobo bookstore website, they have a section on free ebooks. Quite a number of the free ebooks that came on your Kobo are available for download in the free ebooks section of their site.
