You could grab an USB -> PSP charger cable from say dealextreme too, those are cheap (but shipping can take a while). That way you can charge & read at the same time :)

The reader requires whatever is on the other side of the usb plug to identify itself as a computer before it'll charge. Really annoying feature that :(

Is your reader authorized in Adobe Digital Editions as well? I think you have to authorize the reader in there, separately from authorizing it in the Sony software.
