The Chinese Book of Etiquette and Conduct for Women and Girls, Entitled, Instruction for Chinese Women and Girls
By Lady Tsao [Lady Zhao, also known as Pang Tai Ku, Tsao Tai Ku, Zhao Ban, Pan Chao and Huiban]. 45-116 A.D.
Translated from the Chinese by Mrs. S. L. Baldwin [1900]

Zhao Ban was a Han Dynasty scholar, and the first Chinese woman historian; also writing the first Chinese etiquette book. She seems to advise industriousness, modesty and submissiveness for women. Revisionists suggest that this may be a ploy, intended to make sure that a woman survives long enough to be a dowager, or a mother-in-law, when she will have much more power and freedom.

The translator was a Methodist missionary’s wife.
Made from a scan at The Internet Archive. I have included the original illustrations.
