Anatole France [1844–1924]
Tales from a Mother-of-Pearl Casket [1896] Translated by Henri Pène du Bois [1858–1906] A collection of sixteen short stories, made from a scan at The Internet Archive. The first story has Pontius Pilate recollecting his time in Judea, and has a lot to say about the treatment of religious minorities. (Anatole France probably intended a comment on the Dreyfus Affair.) Other stories are drawn from The Golden Legend. Also there are some stories set in revolutionary France.. The last few lines were missing from the scan, so I have added them from another PD translation. |
