sony 505 for approach plates
Hi everyone,
I am looking at buying a Sony 505 for approach plates. Has anyone else used one for this purpose? Is it worth doing or should I just continue using paper? |
Hi oatinc and welcome to MobileRead. Not sure what you mean by approach plates.

Welcome to MR, oatinc!
I'm not sure how well the 505 would display those. I seem to remember that the book with approach procedures was fairly easy to flip through. Is this what you are asking about? |
I suspect it would have problems; they tend to be bigger than the PRS-505's screen. While they might work with the landscape view, that only shows half the page at a time.
I suggest you find someone with a PRS-505 to try it out before buying; see if the view works for you. If not, you might look into one of the readers with a larger screen. |

There is a website that sells Approach plates specifically formatted for the 6 inch screen electronic readers that handle PDF. I loaded them on my Kindle and Nook and they look pretty good.

Wow, thank you Madam Broshkina! You learn something new everyday. I had no idea that it was available. If I would have thought about it more, I would have remembered that the pages were about the size of a screen.
Thank you for going above and beyond to check this out. |
Thanks for reading my post and responding. I fly a business jet and to carry plates for the whole country is kind of space limiting. I have seen plates available for both the 505 and the 600 as well as the kindle. I am wondering if anyone has any experience bookmarking an arrival, approach and the airport diagram so you can go between them easily or not. Since the plates would be my primary focus and not books, I am not sure I want to spend the money on the new reader. And I am not sure if I want to read something that has lots of fingerprints on it.

I've been working on AFD and Approach Plates for my PRS-505. Mostly so I don't need to carry a paper AFD, and as a backup for my tablet which contains my 'real' approach plates.
Here's some photos of them on the 505: http://www.wormley.com/gallery/v/flying/chartblob/ And here's the site with the downloads, for this cycle I did both PDF and EPUB, but for the reader I think I'm just going to standardize on EPUB, it seems a bit faster and requires less processing for me to create: http://www.chartblob.com/ |
