Translations and copyright
 

Is a translation of a work deemed to be in the public domain if the author has died (plus the requisite fifty years or whatever) or does the translator also have to have died? For example, are the Pevear/Volokhonsky translations of Russian novels in the public domain, or only earlier translations?

I am in Australia, but I'd be interested to know what the laws are in the US/UK/elsewhere too.

A translation has its own copyright, separate from that of the original author, so the usual "life + 70" (or whatever) applies to the date of death of the translator, before the work enters the public domain.

Similar in the US.
