Mrs. Humphry Ward [Mary Augusta Ward] (1851–1920)
The Brontë Prefaces From the Transcriber’s Note at Project Gutenberg Canada: “In 1898 Mary Arnold Ward (Mrs Humphry Ward), author of ‘Robert Elsmere’, ‘Marcella’, and ‘Helbeck of Bannisdale,’ was commissioned by Smith & Elder to write a series of critical introductions to the novels of the Brontë sisters for the publisher’s famed “Haworth Edition,” a seven volume set. The resulting six prefaces—none was written for Anne’s ‘Agnes Grey’—duly appeared in 1899 and 1900 to much critical acclaim. Of all the prefaces, that written for Emily’s ‘Wuthering Heights’ merits particular interest; it played a significant role in establishing that novel’s place as one of the great works of English literature.” This will display best in LRF format, where I have managed to use the epigraph menu in Book Designer to get indented text for quotations. However, it is impossible to get both indentations and italics. Therefore two italicised words within quotations are in uppercase. (Other formats have italics rather than indentation for the quotations.) |
After (re-) watching PBS-TVs "To Walk Invisible: The Bronte Sisters" (2016) on Masterpiece, it is nice to go to MobileRead and directly access the sisters' works (& the two works about them and their works).
AND it's always nice to be reminded of Patricia, one of the very nice people who I "met" on MobileRead, oh so many years ago!. . . . :-) |
