Oliphant, Margaret: Miss Marjoribanks. HTML v1. 23 July 2009

Miss Marjoribanks is an 1866 novel by Margaret Oliphant. It follows the exploits of its heroine, Lucilla Marjoribanks, as she schemes to improve the social life of the provincial English town of Carlingford.
The English literary critic Q. D. Leavis declared Lucilla to be the 'missing link' in Victorian literature between Jane Austen's Emma and George Eliot's Dorothea Brooke, and 'more entertaining, more impressive and more likeable than either'. Many readers have also seen Lucilla Marjoribanks as a literary precursor to E. F. Benson's comic creation Emmeline Lucas (Lucia). The text has been read through to correct OCR errors, please let me know if any further errors are spotted.
