An authorised biography of Charlotte Brontë, by her friend and fellow-novelist, Mrs Gaskell.
Mrs Gaskell has softened the character of the only surviving Brontë: Charlotte’s father, and played down his monstrous selfishness. She has also omitted mentioning Charlotte’s unrequited love for her teacher, M. Héger, even though this is the key to understanding “Villette,” “Shirley” and “The Professor.”
She does include a lot of Charlotte Brontë’s letters.
