Out of the box - Calibre for film/serie
 

Recently, I got tired of not having a solid list/historic of the movies and series I've seen.
With a few tricks, I started filling out this list and it was like when I first started using Calibre "How did I do without it all this time??"

Well, got very sidetracked from its use, but Calibre is so powerful and versatile that it handles it without a problem.

(note: I only keep the metadata, an empty entry for each movie, I don't think Calibre is optimized for big files. And even if it was, it would be a big problem of disk space)

Well, Calibre is probably the best tool to manage ebooks and have a library of them. But there are better tools for movies & series, both just tracking watching or tracking physical videos (VHS, DVD, BD etc). I wrote a video library system in the 1980s and a physical book lending library in the 1990s. Calibre can't do what either of those did. Nor can any of the good viewing tracking systems do what calibre does for ebooks.

I do the same with various non-book collections. I put the path of the file in a custom column, and use the open with action in Action Chains to open the file after reading the path from the custom column (template option).

I keep a library of audio and video clips (interview and commentary) in a calibre library, biggest is about 1.5 GB. I view/listen to them with the OS default programs. Apart from custom columns I've added icons for the various formats into ..\resources\images\mimetypes

Why don't you use Kodi for that?

It can track your entire tv show, movie, and music library and keep track of play counts, last played and watch status, all played from within Kodi. You can then install the Trakt addon and sync trakt and Kodi with all that data also.

I don't know how much detail you need, but it is the way I track my media and playback history.

A little while ago I was also toying with an ebook library in Kodi. First trying to get Kodi to call Calibre, then trying to scrape the ebooks into Kodi. Had more success with the latter.
