Williams was a prolific Victorian era writer on the English railway system. In 1852 he published his most important work, "Our Iron Roads: their History, Construction, and Social Influences" which sold over 10,000 copies. The book is a detailed history of the railways in Britain, explaining the construction of embankments, cuttings, tunnels and viaducts, with some mention of the European and US systems. It was one of the first books on railways aimed aimed at a general readership rather than engineers and railwaymen. It is an invaluable and very readable description of the railways as they were just beginning to approach maturity.
