From version 5 on, Calibre won't start on windows 10

I am currently back with 4.23, which works. Several times I tried installing a version 5.x, but it won't start. I don't get any error message, just... no Calibre.
I found an old thread which suggested turning off virus protection, which I tried, it did not help. Also, deleting metadb.db, this file is not even on my computer, but there were some with similar names which I renamed. Did not help.
I would like to be able to run a newer version of Calibre, but I'm out of ideas.
Can someone help?

What is the error message you get when you try to run the current Calibre 5? Also, is your video card driver the most current version?

No error message. No special graphics card, just on board, and windows is current. Actually, I've installed the 32 bit version 5.7.2 in addition to the 64 bit 4.23, and it works fine.

No error message - it just does not run.
And in fact I installed the 32bit 5.7.2 version and it runs fine. Next to the 64bit 4.23 version.

I don't think any of those apply to my situation. There is no error message at all - but Calibre (64bit) just does not start. But the 32bit version does, no for now, I will use that instead.

There were a couple of instances of this (64 bit not working and 32 bit working) in version 4, maybe even 3. I have a vague memory that a reason/solution was eventually found - took a lot of perseverance. If I can find the thread I'll post a link - it'll be a day or two.

Thank you in advance for that. I have had this problem with all v5.xx releases. But this is the first time I thought to install the 32bit version. And that one did work.

Boot into safe mode and try the 64-bit version of Calibre 5.

is there no other way? this one seems fairly drastic to me...

If you are referring to booting into safe mode, that is hardly drastic and is often used to test a program with a minimum of Microsoft's bit and bobs running. It is a bit more a pain to get into under Windows 10 but not that hard. Type msconfig into the search box, click on the Boot tab, select Safe boot with the minimal radio button selected, click ok and then restart. To get out of safe mode, same procedure but Normal startup on the General tab.

If calibre then runs, you can start checking your startup items to see which one is interfering with calibre. If calibre doesn't run, then you have some serious issues with your setup.

That's way beyond drastic. :smack:

Yes, Linux Mint with Mate Desktop, TraditionalOK theme, Win9x/ME window decoration and Oxygen Icons is less drastic than Full Fat Ubuntu.

Sadly my searches turned up too many hits to wade through, so I've not been able to find the thread I'm thinking of.
