By Henry James (1843–1916) An elegiac novella. A sick American gentleman, tired of his arid existence in the USA, visits England, where he has a tenuous claim on a country estate. Journeying with the narrator, he travels to the estate and falls for his distant cousin… This early work of James’s has the most beautiful evocations of the English landscape. It also has an early treatment of the difference between Americans and Britons: a major theme in James’s later works. |
