Progress bar with chapter markers?
I finally upgraded from my Kindle Keyboard to the latest Basic. I can't seem to figure out how to get the progress bar back on the bottom of the page. I'm hoping I'm just dumb and can't figure it out because missing this feature would be really disappointing.
This is the bar I'm talking about: https://sgwproductimages.azureedge.n...171716pdis.jpg Additionally, is there a way to force Mobis to accept custom fonts? I've grown attached to Literata and since my Keyboard was jailbroken I could use that font everywhere. A jailbreak doesn't exist (afaik) for 5.12 so I'm stuck relying on Amazon's seemingly limited implementation. |
The bar's gone. It never made the trip to FW 5.x, even as far back as the original Touch.
IIRC, custom fonts are a no-go for legacy M7 mobi, but should behave more or less properly (barring implementation quirks, which apparently may be many) for KF8 or KFX on supported FW (>= 5.11.something, IIRC, should definitely work on FW 5.12. There's a text file explaining how it works on the device, possibly in a fonts related folder). |
Embedded fonts are more reliable than user added separate fonts. You do need KF8, they seem to work on all Kindles that have a "Publisher" option on Aa, without any patch. Kindle Keyboard 3.4.something to PW 5.12.etc. Dual mobi or AZW files. You have to select the option in Aa. Only Mobi files that are really dual mobi (KF8) will allow extra fonts.

Take a look at the book The Wind and the Willow made/posted by GrannyGrump. It uses some embedded fonts. You lose with Publisher Font on or off. If on, you get an ugly serif font and it off, you don't get the things that are supposed to be there. So if you do use embedded fonts on a Kindle, you have to embed for everything. That doesn't work. In fact, it's very poor. |

It went away on the touch screen Kindles. The chapter markers were tied with a way to navigate by chapter using the keyboard - not sure if that was possible with the 'non touch basic' Kindle but I think it was with the 4-way once reading options were visible.
One way to restore the feature for touch screen Kindles would be to add an improved indicator to Page View. It could show chapter markers on that progress bar, as well as showing percentage. There's plenty of room. |
As many kindles as I have had since, I still mourn the progress bar. It was just the best and most comfortable visual guide of a book for me. With little dots for chapters. It was just perfect. I still miss it terribly. :(
I still have the keyboard and the black button basic. But I need the light now to read. Once in a while I sit outside in bright light and read on one of the older ones and seeing the progress bar is a delight then. I have send them feedback to their kindle feedback a few times about it. I don't expect to ever see it again. |
