New firmware has been released for pre-10th generation kindle, I got my Oasis 2017 updated today:

What's New:
New translation languages: Translation support added for Afrikaans, Catalan, Icelandic, Swedish and Welsh.
New keyboard languages: Keyboard support added for Afrikaans, Danish, Icelandic, Norwegian and Swedish.
Performance improvements, bug fixes, and other general enhancements.

I didn't notice any difference regarding the performances and bugs.
I didn't see those languages in the languages setting (but they are available in keyboard setting).

There is some discussion of this release in the Kindle Paperwhite 10th Generation Software Update 5.11.1 thread.

I have had it on my Oasis 9 generation for almost a week now

Yeah, this is basically the same as 5.11.1

The new Translation languages can be found at the bottom of the scrolling list, which is to say that the list has two ‘tiers’ each sorted independently for some reason:

Arabic/(Simplified) Chinese/(Traditional) Chinese/Danish/Dutch/English/Finnish/French/German/Hindi/Italian/Japanese/Korean/Norwegian/Portuguese/Russian/Spanish

And then:
Afrikaans/Catalan/Icelandic/Swahili/Swedish/Welsh

The Read/Unread filter has magically shown up as I was writing this! It does not involve a software update, mine was 5.1.1 before and remains 5.1.1. It is also enabled for iOS and Android apps, as I discovered earlier today.

With iOS app, I have found the initial state is wrong for many of my books (a number of books I’ve read show as Unread). But one can easily toggle the status (as with Audible app).

I suspect Read status is conferred automatically if you go through the Before You Go workflow, and not otherwise. It does not seem to matter what the current reading position is.

But BYG feature didn’t always exist, so I’ll have to go through my Previously Read collection and make sure all of those are marked Read before I delete that collection, and then go through my To Read collection to make sure none of those are Read before deleting that. Large collections are painfully slow to manage on Kindles, and these are the two largest ones I have by far, so good riddance.

The BYG? The obnoxious thing with stars that returns you to last page if you click closed? It ought to optional.
1) It might not be a book even on Amazon.
2) The version Amazon takes you to could be an inferior version. See 'The Guardian' expose on idiotic Amazon Review system.
3) You might not want to give a star rating anyway as it's giving away part of your privacy and it's too simplistic a way to rate books.

Can I somehow disable that star rating page at the end? They didn't use to have it.

I have 5.11.1.1 on a Kindle PW2015/PW3 bought last November. I don't see an "read" filter. It's annoying that read books are at the top of the MRU list on home screen.

It did not appear for me until after I restarted my Kindle.

(It may be triggered by a flag that Amazon sets remotely. If so your device will need to be online to enable it.)

Its is so strange how some get the "read" tag and other don't. I want it and I didn't get it. 3 of my kindles are on the newest update. Oasis2, current non light basic, Oasis1. I tried restarting, nada. All 3 have wifi turned on all the time. I put the updates on manually.

My android app doesn't have it either and there is no update for it.

Hmpf.

Here is an example of how the new filter appears on my Oasis.

(Added since I don't think that it is obvious: In order to clear a filter you need to click on the option that is already selected.)

Interesting, thanks jhowell.

So Filter and Sort replace ALL ITEMS(128)v RECENTv
(the first of those does seem to filter (as well as Grid/List view) and the second does set Sort Order)

Perhaps they are only "rolling out" this change to a percentage of users. It's a little disturbing that apparently the GUI can be remotely changed WITHOUT a firmware update, unless there are alternate Firmware with same identifiers?

Where has the Grid vs List setting gone? The Read & UnRead seem to replace that.

It is in the Sort menu. (See attached.)

I am really going to like this. Whenever I finally get it. I assume its just a matter of time. I hope.

It's not the first time. Page Flip was remotely turned on after being shipped, as well.

This is perfectly normal alpha/beta testing: you ship the code for both the old and new UI to everyone, then enable the new UI for an increasingly larger percentage of users as time goes by -- unless of course there is an explosion of support requests, in which case you revert it on an ever-increasing percentage of requests, reversing the process. Amazon ships out all their website (etc) changes this way, so it's not surprising to find them doing it for UI updates on their e-readers too. For the website/e-commerce changes, here isn't even any need for their developers to do anything: the increasing percentage as things work well and the falling percentage as things work badly is almost entirely automated. I suspect this is as well.

-- N., doesn't work for Amazon but has friends who do

Does Read/Unread work for USB sideloaded books? Or is it just for Amazon-purchased books and Personal Cloud documents?

tomsem 04-12-2019 02:54 AM

I’ve found a couple of issues:
- (on Kindle) audiobooks Read/Unread status does not mirror ‘Finished/Unfinished’ status when viewed in the Audible app. Only 5 of my audiobooks have Read status, I have Finished many more than that. So I’m not sure how even those 5 got set to Read
- when you are in collection Add Remove mode (where you can page through your entire library to see which are in or out of the collection), the Read tag does not appear for read books. This is problematic if Read/Unread status factors into the collection criteria.

I had to restart my Kindles before the feature showed up. In fact, on my iPad I had to force-quit (swipe it out of task switcher) before the feature showed up in the Kindle app.

And - probably not related to any of this - I deleted a couple of Collections on my iPhone, and added a new one. iPad and Fire mirror this change, but my Kindles still show the previous set of Collections. Wonder what it takes to get them to sync?
