2 Attachment(s)
When a newspaper sends its sports reporter (who is also a famous humourist) Ring Lardner to France in 1917 as a war correspondent, you don't expect a gritty tale of the trenches, and you don't get it. The chapter headings are the clue.
1: Dodging Submarines to Cover the Biggest Game of All 2: I Get to Paris and Encounter Some Strange Sights 3: I Try to Get to the American Camp— But Meet Disaster 4: Finally I Get to the American Camp; What I Find There 5: My Adventures at the British Front 6: How I Didn't Drive Major Blank's Car to Camp Such-and-Such 7: I Start Home, with a Stop-Over at London 8: Back in Old "O Say"; I Start Answering Questions With original illustrations by Wallace Morgan (1875-1948) |
