Hoffmann, E.T.A.: The Golden Pot: v1, 7 Jan 2019
1 Attachment(s)
E.T.A Hoffmann (1776-1822) was a Prussian artist, author, caricaturist, composer, lawyer, musical director, and musician. He wrote many short stories and novellas, though not all have been translated into English.
This translation of The Golden Pot is taken from volume 22 of The Works of Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) edited by D.H. Trail (1842-1900), published by Chapman and Hall in 1898. The plot is very complex, and moves to and fro between a student's life in Dresden, where he falls in love with an upper class young woman, and his life in Fairyland where he falls in love with a green-gold snake. The text was taken from and checked against the version in the Internet Archive. I have silently corrected typos, and made changes to spelling, punctuation, and hyphenation using oxforddictionaries.com. |
