This is not science fiction as might be implied from the title. Instead this is an adventure/travelogue/romance set on the west coast of Scotland. The green ray of the title is a real life phenomenon in which a green flash is seen just as the sun sinks below the horizon in clear weather over an ocean.

Yes, it's interesting, isn't it, how we tend to think of Verne as being as "SF" author when the overwhelming majority of his books were, in fact, "travelogue" style stories. Perhaps it's because his SF stories were so much more popular (in English translation, at least). Even his SF stories, though, almost all involve travel to distant or unknown places.
