Hauntings and Mysteries --- Gothic Tales by Mrs. (Elizabeth) Gaskell (1810–1865)

The contents of this book were first published 1851 ~ 1863. Text is in the public domain worldwide, because the author died more than 100 years ago, and the works were published prior to 1923.

==================
From the talented pen of Elizabeth Gaskell, thirteen gothic tales: a mixture of supernatural and social horrors, telling not only of ghosts and witchery, but also of the dark and twisted side of human nature. The appendix presents “The Haunted House,” a “portmanteau” collection of short stories writted by Charles Dickens and five others, including, of course, Mrs. Gaskell.

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, often referred to as Mrs. Gaskell, was an English novelist, biographer, and short story writer. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of Victorian society, including the very poor, and are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature. Some of Gaskell’s best known novels are Cranford, North and South, and Wives and Daughters. Gaskell’s The Life of Charlotte Brontë, published in 1857, was the first biography of Brontë. Her writing became very popular, especially her ghost stories in the Gothic vein, most of which were published initially in Charles Dickens’ weekly periodical Household Words, later All the Year Round.

This is my own compilation. Transcripts were obtained from gutenberg.org, ebooks.adelaide.edu.au, and fadedpage.com; proofed against pdf scans of the 1906 “Knutsford Edition” of The Works of Mrs. Gaskell, and formatted to follow the punctuation conventions of that edition. Obvious textual errors were silently corrected; punctuation, diacritics, and italics formatted. Story titles are cross-linked to table of contents.
Embedded fonts used for titling .

==================
Hope you fans of Victorian ghost stories enjoy these.
