Firmware 4.10.11591

I just installed the subject firmware on my Kobo Aura ONE. I can't find any release notes, so I'm not sure what's changed. The only thing that I have noticed so far is that long presses are now required to change the format of the reading progress reported in the footer.

I've notice a couple of bugs I've been monitoring still haven't been fixed, but I'll leave that for the bug report thread.

I am hoping the helpful gentleman that usually advises whether "attempt to support newer firmware" may be used with new firmware releases will comment on the compatibility of this setting with this release :)

davidfor 08-21-2018 04:58 AM

The new firmware can probably be called the "Walmart" release. I believe this will be released to the Aura ONE and later devices. I don't know about the other devices as yet.

The changes I know of for this firmware are:
  • Full Overdrive support available in some of the newer devices. This is the for the Aura H20 Edition 2, Aura Edition 2, Clara HD.
  • Fix: Top margin correctly rendered when opening an epub.
  • Fix: Long press needed to change the page progress display when reading
  • Reading settings page has been rearranged a little.
  • Paging in settings that need multiple pages has been improved.
  • Config file option "AutoUsbGadget" has been added. If set to "true" in the config file, the device automatically connect to the PC when plugged in. This needs to be added to the "DeveloperSettings" section of the config file.

If I find anything else, I will update this list.

For calibre, there are no changes needed except to bump the supported firmware version number. This change has already been checked and will be in the next calibre release. Until then, it is safe to use the "Attempt to support newer firmware versions" in the drivers.

¡Bien, bien, bien! I'm not going to change the display of the progress anymore

Interesting! Is this what I think it is? Borrowing from Overdrive directly from the device and having the Overdrive book be in your account for the loan period (and thus sync to all devices using that account)? Will it be available outside the US?

Thank you for sharing your expertise with us, davidfor.

Someone at Kobo has obviously been watching @NiLuJe and I figure out a screen scraping solution to do this when faking a USB connection...

(Semi-joking here... could very well be be a co-incidence)

It is exactly the same support for Overdrive that is in the Aura ONE. So, linking your Kobo account to your library account and borrowing on the device. Then it syncs to any of your devices.

It doesn't appear that they have expanded the supported countries. The FAQ only lists Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

JSWolf 08-21-2018 09:35 AM

Is this firmware yet available for the H2O?

This is pretty big news about Overdrive. (At least I think it is.)

By the looks of https://geek1011.github.io/KoboStuff/kobofirmware.html it appears they have rolled back to the previous version (4.9.11311) for the Aura ONE.

Atilla 08-21-2018 03:51 PM

Overdrive functionality is huge news for me. Well done Kobo.

- If I'm not "walmart" is just the name of the store, whee "Fnac", or "bestbuyca" ca = Canada.

I have version 4.10 but I do not have Overdrive, how to activate please ?

It works for somebody "Water detection" ?
Code:

WaterDialog=True

NIGHT (inverse color mode) MODE : work in 4.10:
*=false for OFF
Code:

InvertScreen=True

If this firmware is not available for some devices (such as the H2O), would it be OK to install just KoboRoot.tgz from one of the firmware ZIP files?

My H2O got the firmware over the air.

I just installed the new firmware version 4.10.11591 on my Kobo Glo HD (Model N437). Although it seems to be working fine, I don't see an OverDrive item on the Settings page. I was so hopeful!

I'm sorry to hear that. They must have the feature set to model number or something.

Strether 08-21-2018 08:00 PM

The connection to Overdrive may not be that attractive an option if others have the same experience I've had. Installing the new firmware erased my wi-fi connection information and after entering it anew, it still won't keep it.

Atilla 08-21-2018 08:01 PM

With Clara HD I am unable to sign in to my overdrive account. It asks for my library in the beginning of the sign in process and yet asks for the library again after I enter my password. But at that point the library selection is non responsive. My only option is to go back to sign in page.

I have both the library and overdrive set up and connected properly on PC.

Also the wifi connection is very wonky on this firmware for me. It never remembers my network. It comes up as no network found message. After multiple rescans networks show up where I have to reenter my network credentials.

After the first time I select my library, I get to a page with Overdrive as the title, there I tap on the select your library from the list line, select my library from the list, enter my card number and PIN, tap enter on the keyboard and it connects. This does not involve my Overdrive account username or password.

My first pass at updating to 4.10.11591 gave me a similar issue with WiFi -- it took multiple attempts for the network to show up, the network disappeared from the list so I needed to re-enter the password. I tried a factory reset, connected to WiFi, downloaded the firmware update, set the Overdrive connection up again.

I've reported the issue to Kobo and would suggest anyone else seeing this problem do the same.

Probably. But, if there was a kernel change, then it might not work. As long as you are prepared for a possible factory reset, you should be OK to try it.

Was Kobo Plus showing up without any changes to the config file? Or did you add these first?

In any case, Kobo Plus is something like the Kindle Unlimited. The last I saw, it was only available in one or two countries, Belgium and The Netherlands come to mind. Maybe it is expanding.

I'm not sure if there is a question here. These options have been in the firmware a while. The first pair relate to the original Aura H2O. This has an option in the Reading Settings for turning on water detection. They were added when the Aura H2O was released. The latter is a brute-force method of turning on the so-called "night mode".

Is this firmware going to be released for the original H2O (aka mark 5)? If so, I'll wait. If not, I'll wait for the patches and then install the previous firmware and then this one from the .tgz file.

My guess is no. I think the point of the firmware is Walmart and expanded OD support. As none of these are for the older devices, they might be skipped. But, I've asked and I'll see what the response is.

I am doing exactly the same steps except after entering my library card number and the PIN it kicks me back to library select screen. At that point selecting the library again does nothing.

I will try a factory reset and report back.

Atilla 08-21-2018 10:11 PM

After a factory reset and reinstall of this firmware both wifi and overdrive are working fine.

Thank you DNSB

geek1011 08-22-2018 01:34 AM

I have fixed the version number (it was missing the third part) in my kobofirmware page, and I am working on checking the zlib patches and will be releasing a new kobopatch version once GeoffR updates his patches.

I'm also going to see if I can find anything interesting about this release.

As for the wifi issue, it has happened to me in other versions as well, but I have a few suspicions about what may be causing it. I'll see what I can find.

gavalanche20 08-22-2018 01:45 AM

My Clara HD updated automatically some time today, and I can't seem to be able to connect to Wi-Fi now. I'm also unable to see anything about Overdrive on the home screen or on Settings, where the instructions on the Kobo website say to go to in order to set it up. Does anybody else have this problem?

I've tried downloading the firmware, sideloading and restarting but no luck. Is there anything else I can try?

Edit: Just did a factory reset, then re-sideloaded the latest firmware. Everything seems to be working again, I just managed to sign into Overdrive as well.

Thanks. I'll wait before installing anything. The issue I have is that Kobo gave us (with older devices) a firmware with some bugs and have fixed some of these bugs yet they aren't (currently) giving us the firmware with the fixes.

I'm not bothered about Overdrive or not. But it would be nice to get the fixes officially.

compurandom 08-22-2018 08:24 AM

The wifi not keeping the password thing is probably a sign of database corruption, and maybe that messes up overdrive too. That's probably why the factory reset helped. Logging out and back in might have also fixed it.

Check your email, Kobo are sending out survey questionnaires in relation to new features
See https://kobo.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/f...n01Lmzzp4CPj5H

Might be for US users though (my account is for some reason a US account, might have something to do with me changing the country setting to get three John Bingham novels for free in a promotion some time back.)

Also, got the new firmware for the Aura One OTA using Beta affiliate.
One thing I have definitely noticed compared to the previous firmware is the lack of the obvious and blatant lag when accessing the TOC or putting the device to sleep.
