Large Kindle compatible eReader available?

I love my kindles to death (started with KB, then NT, since some time on PWII) and really appreciate their ease of use, however, there are moments when I would like something larger, e.g. an updated Kindle DX.

Are there any viable options, e.g. buy a Boox 10.3 and install the Android Kindle App?

Kindle Android app on a large tablet, of buy the fire hd10 which is a 10 inch hd screen with Kindle app built in.
There's probably a Kindle app for iPads also.
The downside of reading in the Kindle app on non Amazon hardware is that 1 click purchase is always on, and you have to be logged into your Amazon shopping account to use the app.. So one careless tap will buy the matching audiobook, and that option cannot be hidden. It appears whenever you open a new book.. Because of that I prefer to convert my Amazon books to epub and read in an app that will not ever buy stuff.

You can set parental purchase controls on fire tablets, but they are OFF by default to maximise impulse sales

You can't buy from within the iPad & iPhone Kindle apps.

The current version of the Oasis has a 7" screen. But beware, some say the battery life is rather poor.

I actually always buy my books on my iPhone to use amazon Smile ....

The Kindle app does work on the Onyx Boox Note. There's a video review of the app running on the note on YouTube: https://youtu.be/u3c96lEtEwI

I just checked out the prices of the Boox! Whew! They sure look cool, but kinda expensive!

That is very helpful, thank you very much :-)

What I am looking for, now will follow up those Onyx Boox a bit more. Hope they come out with a lighted on at some point in time....

I just ordered a Sony DPT-RP1. At 13", it should be big enough. :)

The issue is that it's not really "Kindle compatible". You have to convert your Kindle books to PDF first (but I don't think that's too much of a hassle).

The Likebook note is a cheaper version of the Boox Note with Android 4.4 and a screen light.

Thanks, great input!

You mean this one?

Looks really good.

Actually, even the 7,8" Likebook Plus looks quite awesome, especially the 200$ price tag ....

And I can even order it at Amazon with Prime shipping ... hmmmm.

So, this is the outcome and the start of a comparison :-)

Paperwhite vs the 7,8” Likebook.

At first glance, the Paperwhite is more “snappy” than the Kindle app on the Likebook, but we’ll see how all that extra screen real estate will be for reading...

If you buy a boox, I recommend liberating your books and reading them with native ereading app, rather than using the kindle app.

Andy_T 08-24-2018 06:24 AM

Pajaman, I am aware that this is a good and important consideration (especially considering Amazon's sometimes less-than-ideal approach to ownership of electronic books), however, one of the reasons I am looking for a Kindle-based device is that I have, so far, been too lazy to liberate the 500+ books I have bought from Amazon.

I once, some years ago, tried to use Calibre to convert the books I was reading at that time, to have backups, but I found it to be a huge hassle and stopped after about 50 books. So far, I have been hoping that I will not run afoul of Amazon's policies...
