Neil Gaiman Neverwhere free download

Our friends at HarperCollins in the US have a great promotion running right now around Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman (which Cory assures me is "awesome"). The ebook version is available as a free download for a short period of time:

Sadly it's a pdf...

Even more sadly, it's a DRM-protected, expiring PDF.

(As already mentioned here.)

Even more sad it uses Adobe drm so it's worthless to me at work as our firewall will not allow a connection to the Adobe drm server. Another one bites the dust to the drm cause.

Oops, it appears that Robo and I had the same thought but I'm a bit slower than he.

Here's MORE information that HR will not say in bold letters, but I will:

This novel will be accessible on your Reader for 30 days, at which time you will no longer be able to open the file.

Holy crap.

My TeleRead post complaining about the annoyingness of the restrictions on the Neverwhere giveaway…

…got linked by Neil Gaiman in his journal.

…which then got reposted verbatim on BoingBoing.

Holy crap.

Breathe...that's right...nice even breaths. Try not to hyperventilate. :)

I don't see your comments in the two links. Can you make sure you gave us the correct links?

There's a link to TeleRead toward the bottom of the posting in this sentence.

(Well, free in the sense that it's something you don't have to pay for, anyway.)

Well I am going to be nice and assume they are learning and experimenting. The free Karen Traviss book from HC lead me to spend around $20 at FW on some of her other books. Perhaps I was not the only one to do this and they saw a spike in the sales of the series so promoted. If this latest offering is a bad way to go then they will not get a good result and they may figure out what to do and what not to do. Of course if this latest offering does work for them then we are all wrong and then so be it.
