Mary Ann (or Marian) Evans (1819-1880) was an editor, translator, and novelist who wrote under the name of George Eliot for all but one of her books.

Grace Rhys (1865-1929) was an Irish writer who moved to London after her father's bancruptcy.

The three stories which make up this ebook deal with bereavement and social attitudes in the English countryside. They were published separately in Blackwood's Magazine during 1857, and published together in book form in 1858. The book went through five editions in the author's lifetime and several after her death. The 1910 Everymans Library edition included an Introduction by Grace Rhys.
