Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880) wrote under the name of George Eliot for all but one of her books. The Lifted Veil was her fifth book, and was first published in 1859.

The novella is a horror story, a first person account of a male character tormented by his intermittent ability to foretell the future and to read other people's minds.

The original text had one footnote, which has been made an endnote, and I have added others.

The text was taken from the University of Adelaide ebook library, and checked against the Warwick edition in the Internet Archive published in 1902 by William Blackwood and Sons. I have silently corrected typos, curled quotes, replaced italics and diacritics, and made changes to spelling, punctuation, and hyphenation using oxforddictionaries.com.</p>
