It's out in the US

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XD5YCKX?th=1

vrf 10-11-2017 10:10 AM

Whoa.... a 32GB option.

HarryT 10-11-2017 10:13 AM

Looks like the separate battery cover's been ditched. That's good.

jhowell 10-11-2017 10:14 AM

And here is the press release.

$250? Happy birthday to me!

Do you think Amazon will let me trade in my paperwhite that has a serial port epoxied to the back case :-D

Josieb1 10-11-2017 10:15 AM

Its $250 (or $280 for the 32GB) without a case, so what happens with the battery as 3/4 of it was in the case? Is this really the way Amazon see ereaders going?

Josieb1 10-11-2017 10:18 AM

Its in the UK now. Cheaper actually than the original Oasis https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B06XDK92KS

There's no mention of a battery in the case, so it looks as if they've ditched that.

they are still advertising the "weeks" of battery life. The device is clearly bigger, even looks a bit thicker on the handle side. So it looks like they just transferred the battery to the device.

Control Profile (AVRCP_ support to remotely control playback of Audible audiobooks on Kindle Oasis from compatible Bluetooth devices.

Any chance that means remote page turn in books might work too, and they just don't advertise it?

It would be good if it did.

That must be the added bonus of going for a 7 inch device.

jhowell 10-11-2017 10:25 AM

Looks like firmware updates with new features are also on the way for some current Kindle owners:

Quote:

Audible will be available on the all-new Kindle Oasis via a free over-the-air update when the device ships—and it will be available via a free over-the-air update to Kindle (Gen 8) and the first Kindle Oasis in the coming months. If you’re new to Audible, sign up for a free trial and get two free audiobooks.
...
New Font Size and Bold Settings: Now choose from more font sizes than ever before—and five levels of boldness—for whichever font you choose to read with. Combined with the new, 7-inch Paperwhite display, you can personalize your books so it’s perfectly comfortable for your eyes.

Starting today, the new size and bold settings as well as ragged right alignment will be delivered as a free, over-the-air update to Kindle Paperwhite (Gen 6 released in 2013), plus all newer Kindle devices.
Added: It looks like the new firmware coming today is version 5.8.11.

Excellent - ordered the 32GB WiFi version and the leather case. It has the Voyage's adaptive light, which is what I missed in the original Oasis.

5.8.10. doesn't have the features, no

Amazon is offering me $65 for my 2 year old Voyage trade in....so that brings the price down on this. I liked the Oasis design but hated being forced into a cover so this is right up my alley.

latepaul 10-11-2017 10:44 AM

Just ordered one :)

Feels like less of an extravagance when I resisted buying a Pixel 2 phone the other day.

positively4th 10-11-2017 10:44 AM

The last several generations I kept telling myself "this will be the last time I buy a new kindle at launch"...I just remember the 1st generation Paperwhite, being such a phenomenal improvement over all the previous models, but the uneven lights bothered me.... then the "all-new" paperwhite 2nd gen improved the lighting but still wasn't perfect... then going through the Kindle Voyage exchange lottery trying to get one without a 2-toned screen (the gradient from the lighting), settling for the least bad one I could get... then getting a 1st generation oasis and dealing with the "light cones" on the side now rather than the bottom....

I'm hoping and praying that finally the lighting is going to be just perfect. but I doubt that it will be. Can still hope. Worried that the larger screen will be harder to light properly

Excited that the battery case is gone, I keep getting weird connection errors on my very-well-taken-care-of Oasis. Hope it's going to feel similarly light (obviously won't be AS light) as the existing Oasis...

Couldn't care less that it's waterproof, I don't see myself swimming in the ocean or sitting out in the rain while reading books.

Very excited about the size. I don't think we'll get a DX again but this will do.

Excited about the cover that stands.

The Saddle Brown cover I hope is the same leather as the existing oasis saddle brown. It's really hard to tell from the photo.

32gb seems very excessive, I still have 1.5gb of the 4gb on my oasis.. but when they offer a larger option I can't help but pick it. I guess I talked myself into it thinking I could have lots of comics on it. We'll see.

Sounds as if you're more particular about lighting than many of us. Do you really want to give yourself all the grief again? I have to confess that all the pictures that people have posted over the years showing bad lighting on Kindles have appeared absolutely fine to me. Obviously I lack discrimination :).

The Amazon cover is available in Saddle Tan, Merlot, and Midnight (which I assume is a dark blue). I've always gone with black but that's no longer an option. So, Midnight or Saddle Blue for me.

"Midnight Black" sounds as if it's probably black, don't you think? :) That's what the Amazon UK site calls it.

[QUOTE=HarryT;3591933]"Midnight Black" sounds as if it's probably black, don't you think? :) You may be right. I always think of the color Midnight as in Midnight Blue.

Fabric covers are available in Charcoal, Indigo, and Sandstone. The Charcoal looks nice and saves $15.00.

EDIT

I just noticed from your post and confirmed online that the US site calls it Midnight and the UK site calls it Midnight Black.

Barty 10-11-2017 11:22 AM

Yessss! They ditched the expensive case. No audio jack or speaker, though. Would it have killed them? Even iPhones still have speakers, right?

I wonder if it has real TTS now. Basically, what I want is an updated kindle keyboard with speakers and TTS in an updated keyboardless oasis body. Is that too much to ask?

Ooh is that invert white on black mode I see in the video or is it some kind of glitch? It's only in the menu screen though.

Now I just need to wait for the jailbreak :/

John F 10-11-2017 11:23 AM

Edit: never mind, someone else asked.

latepaul 10-11-2017 11:25 AM

Yes. It's billed as an accessibility feature. It's also the only reason I ever really wanted to jailbreak - because Koreader can do it.

johnnyb 10-11-2017 11:25 AM

I preorderd too, pretty excited now :)

On the product page - Kindle Oasis also includes the ability to Invert Black and White,

Hope you are prepared to wait years for a jailbreak! :D

The Midnight one on the US site sure looks black to me. I hope that's what it is... it's also hard to tell from the photos but looks like the black one might finally be a nice leather rather than the plasticy stuff they've used for that before.

Could you post a link to the fabric cover you found? I am having a hard time finding it on their site.

Josieb1 10-11-2017 11:34 AM

I need to wait for John Lewis, I want a two year warranty but don't want to pay £53 for it. Plus by then the third party covers might be listed.

I think I'll go with the leather Midnight cover. I purchased the black leather case for my PW1, which I now use with my PW3, and it still looks like new.

tdonline 10-11-2017 11:51 AM

Beggars can't be choosy but I wish it was an 8 inch screen. I hope display models will be available at BM stores. I'll have to see if a 7 is worth paying $250 when it's only an inch difference to my PW.

I only really care about the screen size. All the other features are nice to have but not enough to get me to part with $250.

Lighting is the issue. The larger the screen, the less well the light diffuser works. I don't expect the frontlight on the 7" to be as good as that of the 6", for that reason, but an 8" would definitely be a lot worse. I know of no 8" devices with good frontlighting.

JoeC 10-11-2017 11:59 AM

Does anyone have an idea about how the lighting compares to the previous Oasis? I understand the larger screen could be a problem. Amazon is saying the new version has 12 LEDs + adaptive light sensor. I can't find what the "old" Oasis had in terms of LEDS.
Thanks in advance.

booklover6 10-11-2017 12:00 PM

The device is intriguing to me for several reasons. Waterproof, 8 gb storage, and audio. The audio interests me only if it can do TTS, which I don't think is known, yet.

I do worry about the fragility...with one side being so thin.

I like the cloth cover, as it is water resistant. I don't know why people buy the leather case for a waterproof device. Wouldn't they want the water resistant case?

My birthday is not til March, so I have plenty of time to find out about TTS and fragility, before I decide whether to get one or not.

Kindle Oasis featured 10 LED lights according to this review https://ebookfriendly.com/kindle-oasis-2016/

Cool. Seems like any kindle should be able to do it. Maybe that'll come with a new f/w.

Re jailbreaking alas it seems all the devs have moved on and only knc1 is left manning the help desk. I really need it for the custom font because the default ones are too light (and the bold one is too bold and ugly). And reducing the margins. I can't do serial.

Yes but there will now be 5 levels of bold, so presumably that will be a benefit.

*My Voyage is jailbreaked with custom fonts and screen.
