Calibre crashing my Kobo

I've been having trouble with Calibre crashing my Kobo Aura One.

Computer OS:
Mac Sierra &
Windows 10 64-bit

Calibre Versions:
3.5.0
3.6.0

Koboreader version:
4.5.9587 (7/13/17)

Events:
Plug my KA1 into the computer. On the Windows 10 there is no issue with the KA1 being recoginzed initially.

Opened Calibre, after a few minutes it crashes my Kobo ereader with this error message (this is from the Mac, I tried to copy the Windows 10 one, but it didn't copy):

calibre, version 3.6.0
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

IOError: disk I/O error

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages/calibre/gui2/device.py", line 88, in run
File "site-packages/calibre/gui2/device.py", line 511, in _books
File "site-packages/calibre/devices/kobo/driver.py", line 1856, in books
File "src/cursor.c", line 236, in resetcursor
IOError: IOError: disk I/O error

This is followed by a "Disk has not been ejected properly" message on both the Mac and the Windows 10 computer.

Then, if I try connect the Kobo again, on the Mac it will just not be recognized at all, no sign that the Mac sees the Kobo. Windows 10 will tell me that it cannot be recognized.

I did manage once to get connected anyway and deleted the driveinfo.calibre file, which helped me to connect to Calibre again later.

I can't roll back to Calibre 3.4.0 because it is not compatible with the latest version of the Kobo software.

What do I do?

Have you tried a check disk (chkdsk) to see if there is a problem?

3.4.0 is compatible with the latest Kobo firmware. You just have to allow it in the requester that comes up.

calibre 3.40 is compatible; all you have to do is follow the instructions on the error dialog box and check the checkbox in the driver that says support newer database levels (or something similar)

No, I didn't try that. deleting the "driveinfo.calibre" worked.

I tried installing 3.4.0, but it didn't work. What do you mean by the "requester"?

I have to say I have no idea of what's going on. There have been no changes in the Kobo driver code in these calibre versions except the supported firmware version. I don't remember seeing any other changes in the calibre code that would affect it either.

It's a disk I/O error. It means the Kobo drive is flaking out. You can try reseting it or reformatting it (but be aware that doing so will remove all your exisitng books/data from the device).
