February 2017 Book Club Nominations
Help us select the book that the MobileRead Book Club will read for February, 2017.
The nominations will run through midnight EST January 26 or until 10 books have made the list. The poll will then be posted and will remain open for five days. The book selection category for February is: Mystery. In order for a book to be included in the poll it needs THREE NOMINATIONS (original nomination, a second and a third). How Does This Work? The Mobile Read Book Club (MRBC) is an informal club that requires nothing of you. Each month a book is selected by polling. On the last week of that month a discussion thread is started for the book. If you want to participate feel free. There is no need to "join" or sign up. All are welcome. How Does a Book Get Selected? Each book that is nominated will be listed in a poll at the end of the nomination period. The book that polls the most votes will be the official selection. How Many Nominations Can I Make? Each participant has 3 nominations. You can nominate a new book for consideration or nominate (second, third) one that has already been nominated by another person. How Do I Nominate a Book? Please just post a message with your nomination. If you are the FIRST to nominate a book, please try to provide an abstract to the book so others may consider their level of interest. How Do I Know What Has Been Nominated? Just follow the thread. This message will be updated with the status of the nominations as often as I can. If one is missed, please just post a message with a multi-quote of the 3 nominations and it will be added to the list ASAP. When is the Poll? The poll thread will open at the end of the nomination period, or once there have been 10 books with 3 nominations each. At that time a link to the initial poll thread will be posted here and this thread will be closed. The floor is open to nominations. Please comment if you discover a nomination is not available as an ebook in your area. Nominations are now closed. I'm going to do something very different with this next nomination.
I'm nominating Moon Over Soho by Ben Aaronovitch. This is book 2, but last month we read book 1, so let's continue with the series as it fits in the mystery category. Quote:

Thanks, Paul! :) Quote:
I don't have time, but you're welcome to compile a replacement list. Or we could do away with it altogether. Quote:
And I'll third it, especially in light of the fact that I bought the book just last night. :) |

I've read the whole Rivers series. You folks keep this up and I'm good for the rest of the year.
BTW, it is a great and fun series. Kudos! I guess that means I fourth it! |

Other opinions. Any objections? If not, I'll eliminate it starting next month. |
Well, while I like the idea of another Peter Grant, I also think it's past time we read a Ngaio Marsh mystery. We could start at the beginning, with A Man Lay Dead, but I'd rather start at the first of the series that includes an important new character, Agatha Troy, so instead, I'll nominate Artists in Crime.

Amazon: Spoiler:
AmazonUS: $7.99 AmazonCA: $9.99 CDN AmazonCA 3 Book Collection: $11.99 CDN Audible (Nadia May Narration): $19.57 KoboCA: $11.99 CDN (3book) $9.99 CDN (Single) |
I'd like to try a Ngaio Marsh mystery. Second Artists in Crime.
|
Third Artists in Crime.
|
For those who will be reading Artists in Crime in Library editions, the following are Overdrive versions:
OverDrive eBook OverDrive eBook (three book compilation) OverDrive AudioBook (Wanda McCaddon narration) |
And, just to provide another alternative, how about the Anna Pigeon series by Nevada Barr? The first in the series is: Track of the Cat, and is set in the West Texas back country where Anna Pigeon has her first US Parks Service Ranger job.

I nominate The Friends of Eddie Coyle by George V. Higgins.
Higgins was famous for his unique use of dialogue. George Pelicanos suggested to Elmore Leonard that before he write any more crime novels, he should first read Eddie Coyle. Kindle - $9.99 https://www.amazon.com/Friends-Eddie...dp/B003H4I54E/ Kobo - $9.99 https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the...-eddie-coyle-2 Nook - $9.99 http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/frie...=9781429931984 I note that both Amazon and B&N have the paperback for $9.37. |

But if that doesn't win, then I would happily go with Moon Over Soho. In fact, that's my #1 choice with The Dry being #2. |
I second The Rook

Please change your nomination to the 1st book and not the 6th. If you do insist on keeping this, then make sure it's listed in the voting as the 6th book of a series. I want to make sure everybody knows it's 6th of a series which is a very back idea. |

|
Yes. Yes I do. It wouldn't be the first time I started a series in the middle. If I like it, then I'll go to #1 and read it in order.
|
I second The Friends of Eddie Coyle by George V. Higgins. Great dialogue, and the movie version was one of Robert Mitchum's great roles.
|
I second Track of the Cat by Nevada Barr.

To reiterate, I chose this book because it is the first book in which an ongoing key character, Agatha Troy, is introduced. And because there's really zero dependence on earlier books in the series, I see no downside whatsoever. So yes, I DO insist on keeping this, and it's already received the necessary nominations, and no one did so with the information hidden in any way. It's a good book, and a good entry point to the series. You can always go back and read earlier ones if you want, they're all quite short and quite enjoyable. Another reason I chose this book as a starting point, by the way, is that the narrator of the Audible book is Nadia May (real name: Wanda McCaddon). I'd listen to her read the sixth volume of the London phone directory. |

Both The Dry, and The Friends of Eddie Coyle look at least promising, but the Jane Harper book is $13 -- more than I am willing to spend, and it's NOT available at my library. I'm going to hold onto my last ticket for a bit, to see if something else comes along that's interesting, but if the Higgins book ends up needing a third, and I still have mine left, I'll give it a nod.
|
The Dry could use two more nods if anyone wants to help out.
I'm saving my one nod left to see if any other books get nominated. |

Why am I suddenly reminded of the song, 'Imaginary Lovers'? |

*Sigh* to minimum post requirements |
I nominate THE NO. 1 LADIES’ DETECTIVE AGENCY by Alexander McCall Smith.
This is the first book in a delightful series. The mystery aspect tends towards lightweight cases, but the characters are charming. Quote:

Pages: 272 Amazon: $4.99 KoboCA: $5.99 CDN Audible: $17.49 (8.49 WhisperSync) I would also like to urge folks to give Track of the Cat by Nevada Bar a third so it can be part of the voting. |
Whoever gives The Dry a third and and has nominated a book that is still waiting to be nominated, I'll give it a nod.
Now who's first to give a new writer a nod? |
The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency sounds like fun. Thirded.
