July 2016 Book Club Nominations
Help us select the book that the MobileRead Book Club will read for July, 2016.
The nominations will run through midnight EST June 26 or until 10 books have made the list. The poll will then be posted and will remain open for five days. The book selection category for July is a Free-For-All! In order for a book to be included in the poll it needs THREE NOMINATIONS (original nomination, a second and a third). How Does This Work? The Mobile Read Book Club (MRBC) is an informal club that requires nothing of you. Each month a book is selected by polling. On the last week of that month a discussion thread is started for the book. If you want to participate feel free. There is no need to "join" or sign up. All are welcome. How Does a Book Get Selected? Each book that is nominated will be listed in a poll at the end of the nomination period. The book that polls the most votes will be the official selection. How Many Nominations Can I Make? Each participant has 3 nominations. You can nominate a new book for consideration or nominate (second, third) one that has already been nominated by another person. How Do I Nominate a Book? Please just post a message with your nomination. If you are the FIRST to nominate a book, please try to provide an abstract to the book so others may consider their level of interest. How Do I Know What Has Been Nominated? Just follow the thread. This message will be updated with the status of the nominations as often as I can. If one is missed, please just post a message with a multi-quote of the 3 nominations and it will be added to the list ASAP. When is the Poll? The poll thread will open at the end of the nomination period, or once there have been 10 books with 3 nominations each. At that time a link to the initial poll thread will be posted here and this thread will be closed. The floor is open to nominations. Please comment if you discover a nomination is not available as an ebook in your area. I'm going to nominate three books which came in second last year, and were therefore considered for January as well. Clearly, these books are appealling because they would not have finished in second place if no one was interested in them.
***** Pitching in a Pinch by Christy Mathewson Considered one of the best sports books ever written, and I imagine that summer is the best time to read it because it is about baseball. Amazon - free https://www.amazon.com/Pitching-Base.../dp/B004TPGQP0 B&N Nook - 99 cents http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/pitc...sty/1100547781 Kobo - free https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...m-the-inside-1 ***** The Invisible Man - HG Wells Another famous classic I need to get around to reading. Amazon - free https://www.amazon.com/Invisible-Man...dp/B01BBKKUCA/ B&N Nook - $3.99 http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/time...lls/1005704532 Kobo - free https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...nvisible-man-7 ***** Now I'm going to diverge a little bit for my third nomination. Tom's nomination which finished second was the 17th Perry Mason book. I would like to go back to much earlier in the series and nominate Perry Mason #2, simply because it is so early. The Case of the Sulky Girl - Erle Stanley Gardner Amazon - $5.99 https://www.amazon.com/Case-Sulky-Gi...dp/B00IS811W2/ |
I am going to nominate two books:
City of Djinns: A Year in Delhi by William Dalrymple Spoiler:
Amazon UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004WC07...I28DT52I5CJO8F Death in the Dordogne: The first Bruno, Chief of Police investigation (Bruno Chief of Police Book 1) by Martin Walker Spoiler:
Amazon UK:https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004EYT5...I2VR8PCT2KMDVG Sorry I will post other links in the evening. |
I'll second City of Djinns. I read Dalrymple's From the Holy Mountain last year and it was terrific; I've been meaning to read more by him.
|
I'm remote and working off a tablet with Tapatalk, so please cut me some slack on this. I can't easily double-check if something has been nominated or selected before, and I can't come up with links easily either.
That being said, and keeping in mind issybird's desire for something fun for the summer. I think I'll second Bruno, Chief of Police, (This is the North American title for this book. ) I was going to nominate this anyway, as a perfect summer read. Especially since the latest in the series just became available in the U.S. These books have excellent Audible versions narrated by Robert Ian Mackenzie. Amazon US Audible Also note that while this is expensive at $11.99, there is an Overdrive option. Check your local library. :) (Try it, issybird, you'll like it! :) ) |
It's a tad discouraging; my first thoughts were $11.99 and that's too pricey. But Nothing But Blue Skies by Tom Holt has been on my radar for a while; it sounds like fun for summer and it's $5.99.

I'll nominate Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. A tad long, at 610 pages, but a classic.

I'll second Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man -- it's a classic and I haven't read it since I was a teenager, but it blew me away then.
|
I'll third Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man
|
I'll put in a bid for a recent book, The Golem and the Djinni by Helene Wecker, which I enjoyed a great deal.
Amazon UK Amazon US New York, 1899. Two strangers, one destiny. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a disgraced rabbi who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. [She] arrives in New York in 1899. Ahmad is a djinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop. The Golem & The Djinni is their magical, unforgettable story; unlikely friends whose tenuous attachment challenges their opposing natures |

I will second The Golem and the Djinni. Excellent book. It came in second in June 2015 and I wouldn't mind a re-read at all.
Keeping with the theme I will third City of Djinns, it is one of only 3 nominated so far available at my library. |
In the spirit of earlier posts I was going to nominate Jinn from Hyperspace: And Other Scribblings--Both Serious and Whimsical by Martin Gardner, but the only places that have it all seem to be Amazon, so I won't. But if anyone else does, I'll second it. Martin Gardner (October 21, 1914 – May 22, 2010) was a popular science writer who had a regular column in Scientific American for years.

Oh, what the heck! Let's Have a Djinn-fest!

The book selection category for July is Free-For-All, or as I like to call it, the Now's the Time to Nominate Books from my TBR List month.

I will third The Golem and the Djinni

On other fronts, I'm seeing a lot of $11.99 nominations, which seems to have missed the sweet spot. Fine for those who are really interested, but a daunting expenditure for the lukewarm. Some are long 'uns, too. Yet Nothing But Blue Skies, which is short, light, summery and only six bucks has been left to languish. Ah, well. You can lead a horse to water, etc. I'm also going to point out that the fully-nominated City of Djinns is a steal at only $4.99. |
OK, I'll bite. Second for Nothing but Blue Skies. (And even though I'm guilty of supporting an $11.99 nomination, I do agree with you. And I did make sure that it at least was on Overdrive.)
|
Yes, Overdrive availability or inexpensive (<$5) is very important to me, so I won't nominate/second unless it meets that criteria, mostly. Of course Overdrive availability varies.
|
Okay, then. My third and last vote goes to third Nothing but Blue Skies.
|
Thanks, gents! :D
|
My nominations
I second The Case of The Sulky Girl and nominate The Maze Runner by James Dashner, which was nominated last year; I don't know if it qualifies to be nominated again.
And also from my TBR list The Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk Goodreads review Links Maze Runner at Kobo Maze Runner at Amazon Fight Club at Kobo Fight Club at Amazon |
I will second The Maze Runner. I can get it from my library and we need more options.
|
I'm going to nominate Something New/Something Fresh, the first of P.G. Wodehouse's Blandings Castle novels. I can't imagine anything more delightful than a Wodehouse summer read. Something New is the original title of its 1915 US publication; it was published the following year in the UK as Something Fresh. As the date indicates, it's public domain in the US and thus a free read for us Yanks.

Hmmm... Issy, I can't find the $2.99 Whispersync/free ebook deal as your link takes me straight to the full price at Audible, but I did find this $2.99+99¢ Whispersync deal:
https://www.amazon.com/Something-New.../dp/B00KZFPKPU And also this $3.95 Audible deal on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Something-New/dp/B00PUWCJ1Q |
Thanks, Tom. I was struggling with Audible a bit as I'd already bought the audiobook and I obviously missed the right combination.
Just as an FYI to anyone, the PD Wodehouse Kindle books and the $2.99 Whispersync audio books are really a terrific deal. |
I second Something New/Something Fresh. I have never read anything by Wodehouse and Book club selection would be a nice start.
|
C'mon, folks, I'm begging. A little over a day to get a third for Something New/Something Fresh. Either you already love Wodehouse or you will, once you've read him. And it's free! And funny! And for audiobibliophiles, the audiobook is cheap! What's not to love?
|
I use my second nomination for Something New/Something Fresh.
|
:)
I really like this slate as it's taking shape; I'm on board with all the nominations this far. I think my vote will mostly reflect trying for a book that will pull people into the discussion. |
Come on, folks, how about just a little love for Death in the Dordogne, aka Bruno Chief of Police. While I agree, it's at a difficult price point, it IS available from most libraries via Overdrive, and there's a really well done Audible version for those who prefer listening to a book instead of, or in addition to, reading. We only need one more second and we can add it to the already interesting list of books for this month.
|
And, while I don't think we have time to get enough votes for it, I'd like to nominate Midnight Riot (aka, Rivers of London), the first of the PC Peter Grant/Rivers of London series from Ben Aaronovitch. This book completely took me by surprise and I was delighted in it, and all the following books in the series. The books are short (Midnight Riot is 322 pages), the characters are interesting, and the writing is witty and funny. Midnight Riot is a modern London police procedural whose main character is a black PC (police constable). Oh, and then there's the fantasy part, of course.
Amazon.com : $6.99 Amazon UK: £5.99 There is a superb Audible WhisperSync version of the book, read by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith for $3.99 if you purchase the eBook version, or the usual 1 Credit or too much $$ if you only buy that version. Audible US Audible UK Finally, this is available from Overdrive. Overdrive (ebook) Overdrive (audio book) I know this is late in the process, and I apologize -- life and work have been more than a bit rough this month. And if we can't get enough nominations to get this in for a perfect summer read, then I'll be re-nominating in December for Fantasy month. But really, even though you might not think you like fantasy, I think you'll like this book. PC Peter Grant is just a great character, and if you want to try the Audible version, you'll quickly understand why I think Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is one of my all time favourite readers, even though he's done so few books outside of this series. Plus the books are of reasonable length for us to read, at a reasonable price point, and available via Overdrive libraries in both ebook and audio formats. |

I read Midnight Riot/Rivers of London a couple weeks ago and agree that it is a fantastic story. I immediately placed a hold for book 2 at my library.
Unfortunately I don't have any nominations left. |
