2014 Foreword Reviews INDIEFAB Book of the Year Awards Finalist
The first Whippoorwill Hollow novel

May 5, 1968

Virginia State Penitentiary

When two men meet in a maximum security visitation room on May 5, 1968, they have only one thing in common: they both want their lives back. On one side of the window sits Kenneth Deatherage, sentenced to death for the brutal rape and murder of a young woman. On the other side is Nate Abbitt, a successful prosecutor until he drank his way through a midlife crisis.

Nate's only path to redemption is to represent Deatherage on appeal, but his investigation soon uncovers hints of corruption in the county justice system, and Nate finds himself accused of murder by the same forces that convicted his client. As Nate risks his life - and several others - in the fight to clear his name, he makes the nasty discovery that he and his client have much more in common than he'd like to admit.

˃˃˃ Intelligent, atmospheric, achingly romantic legal thriller

“Ken Oder debuts with an intelligent, atmospheric, and achingly romantic legal thriller. I loved this book, and I can’t wait for the next one.”

”" Pamela Fagan Hutchins, USA Best Book Award-winning author of Heaven to Betsy and the Katie and Annalise mysteries

˃˃˃ Intriguing legal thriller, strong historical fiction

“. . . an intriguing legal thriller that looks deeply at corruption in the jurisprudence system. The recovering alcoholic protagonist is a fascinating lead as he begins to regain his lost life when he accepts the harm he committed to innocent people, his wife, his mother, his mentor and himself. . . . the enjoyable storyline spins from a superb capital case to a more conventional David vs. Goliath thriller, fans will appreciate Ken Oder's strong historical fiction. "

- THE MYSTERY GAZETTE
˃˃˃ Timely and compelling

“Moments after meeting his client, death-row inmate Kenneth Deatherage, attorney Nate Abbitt explains: Cases are pending before the United States Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the death penalty. There's a nationwide moratorium on executions until the court rules. Ironically, just days after The Closing became available on Amazon, Oklahoma botched the execution of Clayton Lockett, who according to eye-witness accounts, tried to get up and speak after being given the supposedly lethal injection. Although this book is set in 1968 Virginia, the subject matter could hardly be more topical. . . . This is a great summer read. You won't be able to put it down. And whatever side of the issue you are on, The Closing should inform your view about capital punishment.”

Free Today on Amazon UK - The Grievance by Scott Griffin

'Friday the 21st December. The last day of work before Christmas. Miles has outdone himself this time. Cocktails, sake, cocaine and a night with Lucy, his eighteen-year-old intern, was a new record even for him. Dim sum and high-definition orgies beckoned. But just as Miles starts putting on his coat, something in the corner of his eye catches his attention. Did the cursor on his screen just move of its own accord? Maybe IT are just doing maintenance. Miles should be so lucky. As a slideshow of photos start to play on his computer screen, it quickly becomes apparent that this is more than just an after hours office party joke. ‘If you think you can blackmail me you can think again. I’ve caught you in the act and I’m on my way to see you.'Whose fingers are typing on his screen? And how did they get access to these photos? Maybe Miles is about to receive his Christmas present early this year? '

Free Today on Amazon UK -The Silent Sleep of the Dying by Keith McCarthy

'Mark Hartmann, a consultant pathologist, has problems. Married to a barrister and the son-in-law of a judge, he should be enjoying a comfortable life, but his secret vice is gambling. Seriously mounting debts are starting to threaten his marriage… When he is asked to perform an autopsy on Millicent Sweet, a laboratory assistant, it seems a case much like any other. True, Sweet was only 22 when she died of cancer, but then even the young are not immune to that disease. His initial findings, however, are shocking. Before he can discuss this with his colleagues he is called away to a conference in Scotland, where, drunk and depressed, he ends up sleeping with one of the sales reps. Blackmailed by a pharmaceutical company that threatens to send a video of his indiscretion to his wife, he falsifies his report on Millicent Sweet’s death. But they are not the only people interested in Sweet… Her father, convinced his daughter’s death is the result of a laboratory accident, has contacted lawyer Helena Flemming. When Helena’s partner, John Eisenmenger, a former forensic pathologist, looks into the case, he soon uncovers the findings of Hartmann’s original autopsy and subsequent deception. Gradually Eisenmenger and Flemming begin to unearth the reasons for the pharmaceutical company’s ruthless determination to disguise the truth about Sweet's death. They uncover a conspiracy that involves a new and potentially devastating weapon; it is a conspiracy that ruthless men will do anything to keep hidden... Will the dynamic due be able to solve the medical crime in time? '

Kobo US has a buy 1/get 1 sale through Jan 11. In the "Thrilling Mysteries" section there are a lot of books by a couple of authors I like - Edna Buchanan (police procedurals set in Miami) and Candace Robb (historical). And the "base" prices are pretty reasonable to start with...mostly $2- $3.

Also books by Gary Grossman, Bradlee Frazer, Lynne Heitman, Grant Blackwood, Mia Thompson, Newton Thornburg, David Dodge (including To Catch a Thief, basis for the Hitchcock movie), and Kate Riordan.

Too many books to list individually, but sale link is here:
https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/li...V8ykRAjTCzur-g

Added note: There is also a Buchanan/Britt Montero omnibus that contains several of these titles - depending on whether you have some titles already, the omnibus might be a better deal, even not on sale: https://store.kobobooks.com/en-us/eb...mnibus-edition

Blood of Others received one of the world’s top literary prizes for crime fiction, the 2003 Arthur Ellis Award, given by the Crime Writers of Canada for Best Novel. In his praise of the book, James Patterson, the #1 Worldwide Bestselling Author, said Blood of Others, was: “Tense, realistic, and scary in all the right places."

The disappearance and murder of a lonely San Francisco insurance clerk puts a relentless crime reporter and legendary homicide cop on separate tracks in their pursuit of a killer.

The suspect lures solitary women out of their quiet worlds and into his nightmare as he races the clock and travels the globe searching for the one woman who will forgive the unforgivable.

In the course of a widening investigation, Olivia Grant, a shy gift store sales manager who aches to escape her painful solitude, meets Ben Wyatt, an outcast San Francisco cop on the case, Wyatt is a man gripped with self-doubt over the shooting of his former partner.

Blood of Others is a study of loneliness and human frailties; a story steeped in terrifying suspense that threatens to destroy the lives of those drawn into it as it rockets to a heart-pounding conclusion.

Free Today on Amazon UK - Guilty by Joy Hindle

'A gripping suspense thriller focusing on a mother’s love and a killer’s crime
When Sadie is sentenced to life imprisonment for a terrible crime, her family is left reeling and question every aspect of the past they shared. How could this blue-eyed child have grown up to become a remorseless killer? Is her upbringing to blame, or is there something darker at the root of her being? In a quiet Yorkshire village, Caroline had longed for a baby and was prepared to do whatever it took to become a mother. But as Sadie grows up, Caroline’s fierce motherly love drives her to overlook and defend Sadie’s unsettling behaviour. More than twenty years later, Caroline still tries to keep her troubled secrets about Sadie’s birth hidden from her husband, Simon, and their marriage crumbles. Their two grown-up sons, Bri and Oliver, have both distanced themselves from their parents as they attempt to make sense of their family falling apart. Now Bri wants to prove that his sister is worth fighting for and mounts a campaign to appeal her case, but a tragic event stops him in his tracks. His brother Oliver returns from overseas to make peace with the family and takes up the baton, bringing with him a surprising addition to the family group. As the past web of Caroline’s deceit is unravelled, uncomfortable memories are stirred and closure is hard to find. Is there still a chance of redemption? Or will it come too late? On one level a novel about a mother’s love in the face of family conflict and loss, Guilty succeeds in combining a suspense-filled plot with a closer look at the human mind, using references to real-life historic cases of psychopathy. Egypt, the 18th Dynasty.

Despite ominous portents, the jubilant pharaoh Tutankhamun leaves the Southern Capital of ancient Egypt on a hunting trip to celebrate the long-awaited first pregnancy of his wife Ankhsenpaamun.

Recalling the uneasiness of their farewell the pharaoh is spurred on by the heir he is soon to have and the celebrations he has planned.

An ambitious hunting trip takes shape yet an atmosphere of anxiety pervades in the desert; the pharaoh is unsettled as his wife’s fears regarding the venture linger in his mind.

Men are to be more feared than the wild animals or light chariots and three days later, far from the palace, he is caught in a horrific accident.

As the aftermath of the event unfolds a vicious struggle between rivals Ay and Horemheb commences, and in the vacuum caused by their jostling for power other deaths quickly follow.

Shocked and consumed with dread, the queen is burdened and left alone with her unborn child to face an uncertain future.

But more sorrow soon follows as tragic deaths are officially signed off as natural or accidental and the palace no longer offers protection…

Only Huy, a lowly former scribe with a talent for solving crimes, is able to discover what has really happened. As his investigation progresses in the ancient city Huy realises that his own life has no value to those who commissioned him once he reveals his findings.

He has no choice but to weave a plan whereby the safety of the queen and his lover depends on his surviving long enough to expose the murderous perpetrator.

City of Dreams’ is a gripping Egyptian thriller from master of the genre Anton Gill.

McGill's Short Cases 1-3 by Joseph Flynn is on US Kindle Countdown at $0.99 for about one more day.

link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DJ5ZFY4

Spoiler:
Quote:

As a cop and later a private investigator, Jim McGill has worked some really big cases. Life and death cases. One case, solving the murder of Patricia Darden Grant’s first husband, might even have changed the course of American history. But not every investigation is epic in scope. There are short cases, too.

This is the first collection of three such cases. In Found Money, political enemies of the president — McGill’s wife — try to concoct a scandal by making McGill look corrupt. If McGill is going to stop them, he’ll have to turn things around overnight. In Lost Dog, a little girl wants McGill to find her missing pooch. Only the kid is the daughter of a Russian diplomat, and the Chinese might be involved, too. If McGill isn’t careful, he might step in something nasty. In Pins & Needles, McGill is asked to help a first-round NFL draft choice who put himself on the wrong side of voodoo queen. To come out on top in this one, he’ll have to steal the woman’s juju.

Sometimes, you’ll want a lot of McGill.

Other times you’ll find good things come in short cases.

Flynn started out with a number of conventionally published titles, but is now into self-publishing via his own Stray Dog Press. I've read many of his books, both conventionally published and self-published, and have enjoyed them all regardless.

Death of a Blue Lantern is the first in the Detective Inspector Bao Zheng series by Christopher West. I quite liked this series in DTB many years ago, and am happy to see 3 of the 4 in ebook now, and hope that the others will go on sale at some point. This one is on US Kindle Countdown at $0.99 for about four more days.

Beijing, 1991. Detective Inspector Bao Zheng just wants a pleasant evening away from his nation’s booming capital and goes to enjoy some traditional opera. Instead of a rest, he finds himself with a murder on his hands. Who is the anonymous young man stabbed to death in the back row? How close are the victim’s links to the renascent Triads? What is the connection with the glamorous Jasmine Ren, who seems obsessed with life in the west? Is there a connection to the theft of priceless artefacts from an archaeological dig north of the city? The further Bao looks into the mystery, the more he finds himself unable to trust anyone around him. He must act alone and venture unprotected into the capital’s underworld. At the same time, the once-loyal Party member must wrestle with the agonizing politics of post-Tiananmen China. Dare he voice his true feelings about the events of June 4, 1989? Or does it not matter? Has someone already decided he is expendable?

'Seven years ago, Terry Archer and his family experienced a horrific ordeal which nearly cost them their lives. Today, the echoes of that fateful night are still audible. Terry's wife, Cynthia, is living separate from her husband and daughter after her own personal demons threatened to ruin her relationship with them permanently. Their daughter, Grace, is rebelling against her parents' seemingly needless overprotection. Terry is just trying to keep his family together. And the entire town is reeling from the senseless murder of two elderly locals. But when Grace foolishly follows her delinquent boyfriend into a strange house, the Archers must do more than stay together. They must stay alive. Because now they have all been unwillingly drawn into the shadowy depths of their seemingly idyllic hometown. For there, they will be reconnected with the man who saved their lives seven years ago, but who still remains a ruthless, unrepentant criminal. They will encounter killers for hire working all sides. And they will learn that there are some things people value much more than money, and will do anything to get it.
Caught in a labyrinth between family loyalty and ultimate betrayal, Terry must find a way to extricate his family from a lethal situation he still doesn't fully comprehend. All he knows is that to live, he may have to do the unthinkable . . .'

I'm a big fan of Linwood Barclay and recommend this book. It is a follow-up to No Time for Goodbye, and though you don't need to have read the earlier book, it's better if you do.

I got a US link that shows available...unfortunately it's $9.99
