Edith Nesbit Bland, prolific English author and poet, is best known for her large body of innovative fantasy writings for and about children, such as the Psammead trilogy, "The Enchanted Castle," and "The Railway Children." She also wrote for adults, publishing more than a dozen novels and numerous short stories.

Edward feels that nothing ever happens to him, and that adventures are things in story books. Then he inherits some money, and decides to leave his conventional life. He sets out to tramp about, spending his money as he chooses to make other people happy. Then a chance encounter sends him on an adventure with a lovely young woman that changes both their lives.
