Book Club 2016 Categories Runoff Vote

2016 Mobile Read Book Club Categories Run-Off Vote

Since our 2016 categories vote resulted in a tie for the final category, we are having a Special Run-Off Vote between the two leading candidates. I will not vote in this poll unless my vote is needed to break a tie. This poll will be open for 7 days to make sure all MobileRead members who wish to participate are able to do so. This is a visible poll. It is NOT multiple choice. You have one vote only.

These are your choices:

Biography and Memoirs

Humor

WT Sharpe 08-13-2015 01:27 PM

Far be it from me to interject my own personal opinion (Humor) into the contest. :D

It's a relief to know that you won't try to sway opinion against the superior choice, Biography!

Laughter is the best medicine and good for you. So humor it is.

sun surfer 08-13-2015 02:17 PM

Hey, I like humour too!

Knock knock.
Who's there?
Orange.
Orange who?
Spoiler:
Orange you glad I voted for Biography and Memoirs? :D

PandathePanda 08-13-2015 02:21 PM

Me wonder would the discworld novels be humor?

Oh yes! They fit in fantasy, humor, and classic.

CRussel 08-13-2015 02:33 PM

My problem with humour is that it's very personal, but open to such a wide interpretation that one really has no idea what we'll get. So, my all time funniest book is Victor Molo's Bridge in the Menagerie. But that's ONLY going to work if you've ever played contract bridge. OTOH, no one wanted to include Romance in the list this year, but I could (and will, if Humor wins) argue that Georgette Heyer Regencies are certainly humor.

Memoirs/Biography is a much more clearly defined category, so I think it will be clearer what we're getting. But we already have history as a category, which clearly includes most Biographies and Memoirs.

So, I'm perplexed and sitting on the edge.

Mims 08-13-2015 02:52 PM

Last week I searched one of my Overdrive libraries for Humor. The search returned many Romance books.

That could be said about pretty much any choice we've ever voted on. Sure, tastes in humor are personal, but people have very definite ideas about which lives are worth reading about as well.

you could always nominate humorous Memoirs/Biography if humour wins :)

Ever get the feeling someone's stuffing the ballot box?

C'mon, humor lovers! We need some lightness.

issybird 08-16-2015 02:58 PM

Look at all the genre fiction! On t'other hand, we've only got two categories that are exclusively non-fiction. Balance, I say, vote Biography!

din155 08-16-2015 04:11 PM

Wow, this changed quickly...!
You guys have no humour :p

Only if we are doing books about comedians. Any others don't count. That's a fair compromise.

As the proverb says, many a true word is spoken in jest. Chaucer knew this, for he wrote in "The Cook's Tale" (from the often very humorous Canterbury Tales:

If you love Truth, vote Humor. :D

Maybe we are better off with biography and memoirs if Canterbury Tales is supposed to be funny (it's not at all funny).

It is to those of us who occasionally enjoy dry wit, and I haven't even read it since high school.

There is a grain of truth in every joke as well.

issybird 08-18-2015 10:07 AM

Bumping because we need another vote for Biography, unless Fearless Leader has seen the light! :D

CRussel 08-18-2015 12:17 PM

Your wish is my command. :)

JSWolf 08-18-2015 12:19 PM

We need to laugh more. Laughter is good for you. Plus, it's more enjoyable when you are reading something that makes you laugh.

WT Sharpe 08-18-2015 02:43 PM

Laughter really does do the heart good. Humor is perhaps the only genre with proven health benefits.

Dazrin 08-20-2015 12:49 PM

Well, I wasn't going to vote since I don't really care which way this particular vote goes, but, given that there are only 31 minutes left and it is still a tie vote, maybe I could be convinced to vote one way or the other for the right incentive. ;)

Ah well, too late. Looks like Tom gets the last vote.

It's for the best. I considered posting something like that a couple days ago but waited till the last minute on purpose in case someone took it seriously so I would "accidentally" not have enough time to actually respond. :)

Unless Tom has been tricking us this whole time here are the final selections, order to be determined by WT Sharpe at a later time:
• Science Fiction
• Fantasy
• Mystery
• Thriller, Suspense & Crime
• Classics
• History
• Science
• Patricia Clarke Memorial Library
• Award Winners (fiction)
• Humor
(presumed)

Plus:
January: Second Chance
July: Free-For-All

Yes, that is the line-up. I have edited the poll results to add my vote for humor. Now half of you may officially hate me with the hate I was reserving for CRussel when it looked as if his vote would mean victory for the other choice. ;) It sure was a nail-biter.

"Hate" is such a strong word. How about "mild loathing?" ;)

50% of the selected categories were ones I voted for. How did others fare?

Mims 08-20-2015 03:26 PM

Congrats to WT Sharpe and the MR Book Club on an efficient, streamlined, painless, and civil path to the 2016 list.

HomeInMyShoes 08-20-2015 05:18 PM

I supported 40% of selected categories. But I also supported free-for-all. So it's more like 41.67%. :P

I correctly predicted 6/10 selections. I was surprised that War (close), Biography (very close), Travel & Adventure (not so close) and Romance (complete bust) did not make it.

Romance was the biggest surprise to me, although Science making it was quite surprising as well.

By the time I voted I knew a couple categories I voted for weren't going to make it (Sports / Food), but I was really hoping for at least one or two more to make it (short stories / horror / our favorites). Oh well, win some and lose some.

I was surprised that all three of Classics, PCML, and Award Winners made it. I was expecting only two of those and hoping for only one. Romance wasn't really a surprise though; I haven't seen any indication that many people here want to discuss romance books.

Hamlet53 08-20-2015 05:41 PM

Three of the seven I voted for made it onto the final list. So 30% of the list is definitely to my taste, while 50% is in the not interest category. I'm thrilled to see nonfiction science and history there so :celebrate:.

HomeInMyShoes 08-20-2015 05:41 PM

While I didn't support a majority of the winning categories it was nice to see that at least 1/3rd of voters supported all of the categories that got in.

I think Romance might have been a victim of previous selections. There was a good lively discussion of books in the nomination period this year which got a rather good variety of nominations.

Short Stories (same author) is the only one I voted for that didn't make it that disappointed me. I was also surprised that Award Winners made it. While I thought we had a strong set of books nominated, there wasn't a lot of nominated books in general for that category this year.

CRussel 08-20-2015 05:52 PM

Well, in spite of my need to ritually hate WT Sharpe, most of the categories I wanted got in. There are a few not in the list that I would like to see, and none that I absolutely didn't want and wouldn't participate in. A couple of "yeah, OK, let's wait to see what the actual book is", but most are promising.
