Butler, Samuel: Hudibras (RTF). v1. 12 Jul 2008

Subtitles: "A Satire".
This is reputed to be one of the wittiest works in the English language. It was much loved by Samuel Pepys and other mavens of the 17th century. From the introduction: "The reputation of this incomparable Poem is so thoroughly established in the world, that it would be superfluous, if not impertinent, to endeavour any panegyric upon it. King Charles II. whom the judicious part of mankind will readily acknowledge to be a sovereign judge of wit, was so great an admirer of it, that he would often pleasantly quote it in his conversation." The question is, of course, whether we denizens of a remote century can even understand it, let alone "get it". This is another of those monumental works where the exact structure is necessary to it's readability and understanding. As I have remarked before, none of our existing book making tools are really adequate in this regard. Yet, putting it in RTF format works reasonably well and is pretty straight-forward to do. This eBook was specifically formatted for and checked out with the Sony Reader. It may or may not work well with other readers. |
