I'll third Way Station. Appears to be couponable at Kobo.

bfisher 07-26-2015 05:50 PM

It's only $CDN 6.15 at amazon.ca
http://www.amazon.ca/Way-Station-Cli.../dp/B00YO78RRS
so probably less than $5.00 in real money ;)

Nothing interesting happens. Nothing at all :smack:

Spoiler:

Huge alien vessel arrives in solar-system.
Have to work out what to do.
Only one vessel near enough to intercept.
Dock with massive rotating object.
Enter a dark object as dark and mysterious and a million times bigger than the Great Pyramid.
Explore a strange, alien interior.
Environment wakes up as approaches sun, and...
Aliens appear.
Cross an alien sea and get stranded.
Launch a rescue party.
Daring escape.
Last-ditch attempt to breach the environment's secret before escaping.
Oh, and there's the possibility Earth will blow it up with the exploration crew inside.

It's not my favourite Clarke book, far from it, but he was one the three greatest sci-fi writers of the 20th Century. His droppings are better than most writers' masterworks.

To say nothing interesting happens is, as my list proves, silly :) You should have stuck with your subjective assertion that you find it boring.

Way Station is very good. Simak reminds me a bit of Clarke. This was his best book, I think.

I love the new avatar JSWolf.

AC Clarke is a good writer. But every writer can have a dud and this is Clarke's dud.

I don't know. 4.02 average rating at Goodreads, its many awards include a Hugo and a Nebula award...

Somebody liked it.

Some Hugo awarded books are lousy and this is one of them.

It's just an awful book. It's got a really dull plot and nothing actually ends up happening.

^I sense it winning, but I'm not voting for it.

There's a new article about Delany in the New Yorker.
