Do you want buttons?

Do you want physical page turn buttons on your ereader?

John F 07-11-2015 01:19 PM

I voted yes. And the Kindle Voyager buttons would be fine as long as they provided some sort of tactal feedback.

soulfuldog 07-11-2015 01:25 PM

I used to love the page turn buttons on my Kindle Keyboard (was never too fussed about them on my Sony as their placement at the bottom of the reader wasn't as comfortable and easy to use), but after getting used to the touch screen I barely miss them.

tubemonkey 07-11-2015 01:26 PM

Don't care. As long as the screen displays words, I'm a happy camper. :D

theducks 07-11-2015 01:35 PM

Tactile and tactile feedback.
Note Real computer keyboards have tactile markers on the F,J and 5 keys

howyoudoin 07-11-2015 02:39 PM

I loved the buttons on the kindle keyboard. My ideal e-reader would be the Kobo Aura H2O with the kindle keyboard buttons slapped onto the sides. I wouldn't even mind losing the waterproofing if they did that.

Apache 07-11-2015 02:56 PM

I had buttons on my Sony Reader. I do not have buttons on my HD+. I do not miss buttons and voted no.

Cyberman tM 07-11-2015 04:17 PM

I voted yes, assuming that it's understood that I still want a touch-screen with touch-to-turn-page as well.
Best of both worlds :-)

cvkemp 07-11-2015 04:29 PM

My vote is no. Why? on every reader or tablet I have ever owned the buttons and switches are the first than to go bad.

Ripplinger 07-11-2015 04:50 PM

Another no vote. My Sony 350s had buttons for some functions which you had to use, but really, as cvkemp said, it's just more things to eventually break with use (although I'll admit they all still work perfect on the 350s).

But I actually prefer no buttons and like the smooth surface of the reader.

Solo1959 07-11-2015 05:12 PM

Yes absolutely. And not just buttons but buttons on the left side of the device. My Onyx Boox Lynx T68 has buttons on the right and that doesn't help me at all because I hold the device in my left hand.

I'm with the monkey. lol. I like touch screen just fine.

latepaul 07-11-2015 05:29 PM

Yes, but it's a preference rather than a must-have.

Turtle91 07-11-2015 07:23 PM

I don't want buttons that break...

I don't like having to push a certain piece of realestate to tutn the page - I want CHOICE!!!

Besides, I can't be the only one to try turning a page when my hands are full and had to use my nose instead... ;)

Barbara1955 07-11-2015 07:37 PM

I was reading a book on my Fire phone a week ago. I Closed the book went to my K3 to read another ebook. Yes I used the phone All week for other thins. Well got done the book on the K3 yesterday & decided to finish the book on the phone... Dang if it didn't say I was on the Last Chapter! Wrong on chapter 3 when I stopped!

I Voted Yes FOR Phy Page Turns!

readerlover 07-11-2015 08:37 PM

Yes because then the screen is free of greasy fingerprints. And it seems like everything is touchscreen nowadays and once the screen dies, you're royally screwed because that means the entire device is useless now. Just my .02.

spindlegirl 07-11-2015 09:05 PM

Voted "don't care" because it used to matter, but now I have a button-less kindle (7th gen 2014) and I am finding I like it so much more.

The best of both worlds would include an option to turn of the page turn part of the touch interface while keeping the rest.

I am tired of getting a page turn when I am trying to look up a word in the dictionary, or bring up the menu, or highlight.

I am also convinced that some of the unintentional page turns on the Voyage, at least for me, come from the touch sensitive area coming too close to the bezel. I have had page backs happen when I am trying to use the left hand page forward button.

So, what would you use a device that has working buttons, but a non-working display for - a paperweight?

goldilocks 07-11-2015 10:44 PM

I voted yes! I like buttons! After reading about all the screen problems over the years...I think buttons are more reliable. I don't want to think about what part of the screen I need to tap or swipe or pinch to get where I want to be.

Really!? Sounds kind of gross-hope you didn't have a cold:D

Atunah 07-11-2015 10:56 PM

I must have buttons for the reading part. Its a must have for me.

meeera 07-11-2015 11:21 PM

I liked the KK buttons, but I confess to preferring waterproofing, and I get along with touch screens just fine. I would prefer finer configurability of touch zones, though.

DiapDealer 07-11-2015 11:40 PM

Don't need 'em. Wouldn't care if they there (in addition to touch), but I probably wouldn't use them.

One doesn't preclude the other. I think when people hear 'page turn buttons' they think of the ones on the first Kindle.

The Nook Simple Touch has page turn buttons, but they are covered by the same material as the rest of the bezel. Those types of buttons could still easily be added to a waterproof e-reader.

eschwartz 07-12-2015 02:36 AM

I voted no, because touchscreens work perfectly well (for me). While I wouldn't be morally offended if they were there, I certainly don't "want them". It would be disingenuous to reply "I don't care", that's what the "no, I don't want them" is for...

Besides, keeping legacy technology can only serve to increase the cost, which is something I do actively care about.

I promise you, you aren't alone. :2thumbsup
I used to try, with limited success, to do the same back before ereaders ;) it's much easier these days.

gmw 07-12-2015 02:41 AM

I don't really care a whole lot. Yes, on my PRS-650 I use both, depending on the circumstances, but I doubt if I would miss the buttons much if they weren't there.

I have a kindle 4 NT and I like the buttons. Particularly at the beach or pool side I put it in a plastic quart freezer bag and I need buttons not touch screen. It's the only thing keeping me from upgrading to a paperwhite.

silverraven 07-12-2015 09:06 AM

I have the Kindle 4NT. I think those are (and I haven't used a voyage yet, so I can't judge them) the best button design yet. I did not like the Sony buttons. The Jetbook slider was ok, but it was one handed. The K4NT buttons are in just the right spot with just the right amount of pressure (for me) so that I can hold the reader with my thumb resting on the buttons and never have to move it as I read.
I would have loved that type of button stuck on to the Paperwhite. And yes, include a firmware option of turning them off under settings for anyone that hates buttons.

I prefer buttons. As far as them breaking, my Sony T-1 buttons are still going strong. When reading on my Note 2, I use the volume rocker to turn the pages. Having a screen all smudged with fingerprints drives me up the wall.

Ravensknight 07-12-2015 12:42 PM

I've liked buttons every since the sony505. Mainly use a K4nt now and I agree with the others. Having buttons on both sides is great for switching hands...

GoSharks 07-12-2015 12:53 PM

A button! A button! My kingdom for a button!

BenG 07-12-2015 01:41 PM

Yes, for buttons in addition to the touch screen, but it's not a deal-breaker.

Phogg 07-12-2015 01:44 PM

I voted for buttons although I have some readers without them.
As far as my favorite page control goes, it was using the rocker switch on the Aztak Pocket Pro.

Same here, my original ebook readers (both Sony and Amazon) had buttons. I do all my ebook reading on touch screen devices now (iPad, iPad mini and Sony PRS-T2). A button makes no sense for such devices.

dordale 07-12-2015 01:58 PM

I didn't vote--I prefer buttons but they aren't a must have for me. I have a Kindle PW2 and a Kobo Aura HD--both without buttons. I'm perfectly fine with tapping/swiping to turn a page--but if I had buttons I know I'd use them part of the time.

On my old Sonys (350 and 650) I found I used the buttons about half the time and swiping the page the other half.

I think must have is a stronger requirement than want, and that prefer is close enough to want to warrant a vote.

That's part of why I prefer reading on a dedicated reading device. I'm OK with people doing all their reading and computing on tablets and even phones as long as dedicated readers and real computers don't disappear or become unaffordable.

Dan23 07-12-2015 05:49 PM

Yes, like in the older Kindles (KK, K4NT...). This feature is crucial and is keeping me from getting a device with a light. The Voyage buttons do not cut it for me as I can not press them by flexing my thumb from the side like in the other Kindles (the Voyage buttons need to be pressed from the top and can't be pressed from the side)
