Germania and Agricola

The Germania is an account of the customs and manners of various German tribes. The Agricola is s life of Tacitus’s father-in-law, Cnaeus Julius Agricola, the Roman general who finally subdued Britain.

From the Agricola: (Calgacus complains about Roman oppression):
“To ravage, to slaughter, to usurp under false titles, they call empire; and where they make a desert, they call it peace.”
